Description

The wingspan is 15–16 mm for males and 16–17 mm for females. A 2023 review of Japanese material gives a mean forewing length of 7.0 mm (range 6.3–7.6 mm, n = 27). The ground colour of the forewing is variable, ranging from brown or black to dull green, with a semicircular marking in the apical area; compared with related species the forewing is relatively narrow, and males bear scale tufts near the anal margin of the hindwings. The species is very similar to Sorolopha asymmetrana in forewing pattern and in the male genitalia, but can be separated by the shape of the ventral process of the cucullus, which is uniform in width in S. sphaerocopa but narrowed at the apex in S. asymmetrana; it is also similar to Sorolopha asphaeropa in the male genitalia, from which it is distinguished by features of the hindwing.
