Discussion: Rattus rattus species group. Despite past confusion with Sundamys muelleri, R. stoicus is defined by a unique set of derived and primitive features and is endemic to the Andaman Isls (Musser and Heaney, 1985; Musser and Newcomb, 1983). Its closest phylogenetic ally within the R. rattus species complex has yet to be determined (Musser, 1986).
